In 2009, the Ghanaian rap scene witnessed a historic moment when legendary Hiplife artist Obrafour officially handed over the symbolic “Rap Crown” to a young and fast-rising rapper — Sarkodie. The event, which took place during a live performance in Accra, marked the beginning of a new era in Ghanaian hip-hop and Hiplife music.

Obrafour, widely known as “Rap Sofo” and celebrated for pioneering Twi rap with deep lyrical substance, publicly endorsed Sarkodie as the next king of Ghana rap. At the time, Sarkodie had already begun to attract massive attention with his unmatched speed, flow, and punchlines, but this gesture from a living legend elevated his status from upcoming star to heir apparent.
The crowd erupted in cheers as Obrafour removed his symbolic rap crown and placed it on Sarkodie, blessing him to continue the legacy. This iconic moment became a major turning point in Sarkodie’s career, paving the way for his dominance in the years that followed.
Since then, Sarkodie has grown to become one of Africa’s most decorated rappers, winning multiple awards and putting Ghanaian rap on the global map — a legacy that began with Obrafour’s passing of the torch in 2009.
