The National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Squad (NAIMOS) has successfully overpowered and arrested a group of machete-wielding “machomen” who were guarding an illegal mining site at Osibo Town.

According to reports, the task force, acting on credible intelligence, stormed the area in a well-coordinated operation early Friday morning. The illegal miners attempted to resist arrest, brandishing weapons, but the officers managed to subdue them without any major casualties.

The suspects are currently in custody assisting investigations, while the owner of the illegal mining site has reportedly fled the scene and is being pursued by authorities.

Officials from the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources have commended the NAIMOS team for their swift intervention, stressing that the government remains resolute in combating illegal mining — popularly known as galamsey — across the country.

Residents of Osibo Town have also expressed relief, describing the operation as timely, given the environmental destruction and safety threats posed by the activities of the illegal miners.

Authorities have assured the public that the operation forms part of a nationwide crackdown to restore sanity to mining communities and protect Ghana’s natural resources.
