A heartbreaking and disturbing incident from Kafue has left residents of the community in shock and disbelief after a young woman, identified only as Kafue, allegedly began showing signs of mental distress shortly after rejecting a marriage proposal from the man who sponsored her university education.

According to residents, the man—popularly known in the area as Ba Daniel—had supported the young lady financially throughout her entire university journey. From her first year until graduation, he reportedly paid her tuition fees, accommodation, transportation, and daily upkeep.

Community members say Ba Daniel’s dedication was widely admired, with many believing the relationship would naturally end in marriage. Neighbours described him as committed and generous, often referring to Kafue as his “future wife,” though neither party publicly confirmed their relationship status.

Trouble reportedly began when Ba Daniel formally proposed marriage after Kafue completed her university education. To the shock of many, she allegedly declined the proposal. Witnesses claim that only hours later, the young woman was seen near the local market talking to herself and behaving in a manner that raised serious concern.

“She was fine earlier in the day,” one resident claimed. “Then suddenly, people started saying she was not herself anymore. It happened very fast.”

As news of the incident spread, residents were left divided—some expressing deep sympathy for the young woman, while others questioned the emotional pressure that may have surrounded the situation. Several voices in the community have cautioned against jumping to conclusions, stressing that mental health issues can be complex and should not be linked to a single event without medical confirmation.

Local leaders have reportedly called on the family to seek immediate medical and psychological support for the young woman, while urging the public to avoid spreading unverified claims or stigmatizing those facing mental health challenges.

As of the time of reporting, neither Ba Daniel nor the young woman’s family has made an official statement. Authorities have also not confirmed any medical diagnosis, and the exact cause of her condition remains unclear.

The incident has reignited conversations around mental health awareness, emotional dependency, and societal expectations surrounding relationships, particularly where financial support is involved.
