The Special Operations Unit (SOU) of the Ghana Police Service has arrested a man who allegedly posed as a soldier while attempting to sell firearms to undercover police officers in Kasoa, Central Region.

According to police sources, intelligence operatives received credible information that the suspect was actively seeking buyers for assault rifles and other weapons within the Kasoa area. Acting swiftly on the tip-off, the SOU launched a covert operation that led to the suspect’s arrest on Tuesday.

The suspect has been identified as Enock Appiah, who claimed to hold the rank of Warrant Officer Class II (WOII). However, preliminary investigations suggest he is not a serving member of the Ghana Armed Forces.

During a search conducted at the time of arrest, officers reportedly recovered two pistols, three rounds of AK-47 ammunition, multiple military uniforms, and a fake military identity card bearing the suspect’s name. The items were seized as evidence.

Police believe the suspect used the military attire and forged identification to gain trust and facilitate illegal arms transactions. Authorities say the operation prevented potentially dangerous weapons from falling into the hands of criminals.

A police source stated that investigations are ongoing to determine how the suspect acquired the firearms, ammunition, and military equipment, as well as whether he is connected to a wider criminal network involved in arms trafficking.

The Ghana Police Service has reiterated its commitment to tackling illegal firearms circulation and impersonation of security personnel, warning that individuals who engage in such acts will be dealt with decisively under the law.

The suspect is currently in police custody and is expected to be arraigned before court once investigations are concluded.
