Billy Vigar, aged 21, has tragically passed away following a catastrophic brain injury sustained during an Isthmian League match for Chichester City.
During the match against Wingate & Finchley, Vigar is reported to have collided with a concrete wall while attempting to keep the ball in play, suffering what was described as a “significant brain injury.” He was rushed to hospital, placed into an induced coma, and underwent emergency surgery on Tuesday in hopes of aiding recovery.
Despite medical intervention, his condition could not be reversed, and he died on Thursday morning. In a statement, Chichester City FC confirmed the news and requested that the family’s privacy be respected.
Vigar’s journey began in Arsenal’s academy, which he joined in December 2017 at age 14. He signed a professional contract in July 2022, though he never made a senior appearance for Arsenal’s first team. Over the course of his development, he had loan spells — including at Derby’s under-21 side and Eastbourne Borough — before moving on to Hastings United and later joining Chichester City.
News of his death has prompted an outpouring of grief across the football community. Arsenal paid tribute to him as a “quick, powerful and fiercely determined” player who was deeply loved by teammates and coaches alike. Derby County, Hastings United, Chichester City, and other clubs he was associated with also expressed condolences to his family.
In response to the tragedy, supporters and fans have launched a petition urging the removal of hard, immovable structures—such as brick walls—from the perimeters of football pitches, arguing they pose fatal risks to players. The Independ ent reports the petition (dubbed “Vigar’s Law”) calls for safer playing environments at all levels of the sport.
The Isthmian League has announced that in honour of Vigar, matches this weekend will observe a minute of silence and players will wear black armbands. Meanwhile, Chichester City have postponed their upcoming game.
Billy Vigar’s sudden death is a sobering reminder of the risks athletes sometimes face. Though his career was still young, he had shown promise and was held in high regard by coaches, teammates, and fans. His loss is mourned deeply across the footballing world.
